Galileo is the European Union's global navigation satellite system. Its satellites orbit in medium Earth orbit and are listed in tracking catalogues as GSAT followed by a four-digit number. azmth counts them live from CelesTrak data.

What Galileo is

Galileo is the European Union's global navigation satellite system, a civil-controlled network in medium Earth orbit that provides positioning, navigation and timing worldwide. On 14 September 2026 the European GNSS Service Centre's constellation table listed 32 Galileo satellites, of which 28 were usable. azmth tracks 32 Galileo satellites in CelesTrak's active catalogue.

Galileo belongs to the European Union Space Programme. EUSPA runs service provision and publishes the system's status through the European GNSS Service Centre (GSC), and ESA procures and launches the satellites. Galileo is under civilian control, whereas GPS is operated by the U.S. Space Force. Galileo's satellites orbit at about 23,220 km, a height derived from their CelesTrak orbital elements, at inclinations between 54.4 and 57.1 degrees; GPS satellites orbit lower, at about 20,200 km.

The first two satellites, from the IOV family, launched on 21 October 2011. By 17 December 2025, 34 IOV and FOC satellites had been launched: 4 IOV and 30 FOC. Two of them have been decommissioned: GSAT0104 on 16 April 2025, after 13 years, and GSAT0205 on 15 December 2025. Four more remain in the GSC table as not usable. GSAT0204 was removed from active service on 8 December 2017 and GSAT0210 on 5 September 2023. GSAT0201 and GSAT0202 have been unavailable since 18 February 2021; both were left in eccentric orbits, inclined at 48.8 degrees, after their 2014 launch anomaly.

In July 2019 a ground-segment equipment malfunction interrupted Galileo's navigation and timing services for six days, from 10 to 17 July, as reported by Phys.org. In September 2026 a single satellite, GSAT0234, had an unplanned outage of all its signals from 05:54 UTC on 2 September until the GSC declared it usable again from 04:54 UTC on 12 September. As of 14 September 2026 no cause had been published beyond the GSC's notices.

The latest launch, L14 on 17 December 2025, was the first Galileo flight on Ariane 6 and carried GSAT0233 and GSAT0234. L15 is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to InsideGNSS on 25 February 2026. L15 and L16 are planned as Ariane 6 launches of two satellites each that complete the first-generation constellation. Arianespace holds Ariane 6 contracts for L17 and L18, the first two pairs of Galileo Second Generation satellites, which use electric propulsion. No newer ESA or EUSPA schedule for L16 or L17 was found; Wikipedia's list of Galileo satellites puts L16 in the first quarter of 2027 and L17 in 2027, citing ESA and CNES, so both dates are targets.

How to find them on the globe

CelesTrak names Galileo satellites GSAT0 followed by three digits, with a Galileo name in brackets: FOC satellites appear as, for example, GSAT0234 (GALILEO 34), and the remaining IOV satellites as GSAT0101 (GALILEO-PFM), GSAT0102 (GALILEO-FM2) and GSAT0103 (GALILEO-FM3). The GALILEO number in brackets does not follow launch order exactly (GSAT0226 is GALILEO 31), and the European GNSS Service Centre lists each satellite by its GSAT number together with a separate SV ID, so GSAT0234 is also E32.

Galileo's services include the Open Service, the High Accuracy Service (HAS), the OSNMA authentication service and the Public Regulated Service. ESA said on 24 January 2023 that the High Accuracy Service was set to deliver horizontal accuracy down to 20 cm and vertical accuracy of 40 cm, free of charge worldwide to users with a suitable receiver, through corrections carried in the Galileo signal. The official Open Service accuracy figure, set out in Galileo's service definition document, was not retrieved for this page, so none is quoted here. On 14 September 2026 the European GNSS Service Centre marked 28 Galileo satellites usable and 4 not usable, with GSAT0234 back in service since 12 September after its outage.

Commonly got wrong

  • (1) Searching a satellite catalogue for GSAT does not isolate Galileo. CelesTrak names Galileo satellites GSAT0 followed by three digits, but on 14 September 2026 its gnss group also held ISRO's unrelated GSAT-8, GSAT-10 and GSAT-15, which CelesTrak groups with the satellite-based augmentation (SBAS) payloads. azmth counts Galileo by names beginning GSAT0 followed by three digits.
  • (2) Each Galileo satellite has three identifiers that do not match. CelesTrak names one satellite GSAT0234 (GALILEO 34), and the European GNSS Service Centre lists the same satellite with the SV ID E32. The GALILEO number does not follow launch order exactly either: CelesTrak lists GSAT0226 as GALILEO 31.
  • (3) A satellite flagged as operating in CelesTrak's SATCAT can be out of service. When the catalogue was checked for this page on 14 September 2026, SATCAT still flagged GSAT0205 as operating, although GSC notice NAGU 2025059 had decommissioned it on 15 December 2025, and flagged GSAT0210 the same way although the GSC lists it as not usable. The GSC constellation table is the authority on which satellites are usable.
  • (4) Galileo counts from different sources measure different things. On 14 September 2026 a CelesTrak SATCAT search for GSAT0 returned 36 payloads, the 34 launched Galileo satellites plus the GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B test satellites; CelesTrak's galileo group and the GSC table each held 32; and the GSC marked 28 of those usable.
