What is China doing on the Moon right now?

As of August 11, 2026, China has no spacecraft operating on the lunar surface and one relay satellite, Queqiao-2, working in lunar orbit. Its next mission is Chang’e 7, a four-part robotic mission to the lunar south pole: an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a small rocket-powered hopper that is meant to jump into a permanently shadowed crater and look for water ice. The spacecraft has been at the Wenchang launch site since April 2026 and its Long March 5 rocket arrived on 13 July 2026. CNSA has never announced a launch date, saying only that it is planned for the second half of 2026.

Did China’s Moon rocket explode?

No. A Chinese rocket did fail at Wenchang on 10 August 2026, and because Chang’e 7 is waiting at the same spaceport the two are being confused, but they are separate missions on separate rockets from separate pads. The rocket that failed was a Long March 7A carrying ChinaSat-4B, a communications satellite. Chang’e 7 flies on a Long March 5, a larger vehicle that launches from a different complex. Chang’e 7 was not on that rocket and was not damaged by it.

What Xinhua actually reported is narrower than the headlines: at 20:02 Beijing time (12:02 UTC) on 10 August, a Long March 7A carrying ChinaSat-4B lifted off from Wenchang, the rocket suffered a flight anomaly, the mission failed, and the cause is under investigation. Several outlets report, from video, that the vehicle broke up about 85 seconds in, and no official statement uses the word explosion. No agency has attributed a cause. No casualties, injuries or ground damage have been reported by any official source or wire service.

Does the Long March 7A failure delay Chang’e 7?

Nobody has said, in either direction. As of August 11, 2026 no Chinese agency has announced a delay to Chang’e 7, and none has confirmed it is still on schedule either. There is a real technical connection worth understanding: the Long March 7A’s first stage and boosters use YF-100 engines, and the Long March 5 uses the same engine type on its boosters, so if the investigation points at that engine it could affect other rockets. That is analysts reasoning about a possibility, not an announcement. No cause has been attributed and no fleet stand-down has been declared.

We will update this line when an investigation result or a schedule statement is published. Until then, treat anyone who tells you Chang'e 7 is delayed, or that it is definitely unaffected, as guessing.

When will Chang’e 7 launch?

Officially, the second half of 2026, with no date. That wording, 计划今年下半年择机发射, is what CNSA and China’s crewed space agency have said since April 2026 and it has not changed. A launch date of 24 August 2026 is widely repeated but was never announced: it comes from a journalist reading air navigation warnings that reserve airspace from 24 to 31 August. Backup opportunities are reported to run into October.

What will Chang’e 7 do on the Moon?

Chang’e 7 is the most complex robotic Moon mission anyone has attempted. Four spacecraft fly together: an orbiter that maps the south pole in high resolution, a lander, a rover, and a hopping probe. The hopper is the reason the mission matters. Crater floors at the lunar south pole have not seen sunlight for billions of years and may hold water ice, but no rover can drive into permanent darkness and survive. A hopper can jump in, sample, and jump back out to sunlight. It carries an instrument designed to detect water molecules and hydrogen isotopes in the soil it collects.

It carries six international payloads from seven countries and organisations: Egypt, Bahrain, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Thailand, and the International Lunar Observatory Association. Has China ever failed a Moon landing?

No landing attempt by China has failed. Chang’e 3 in 2013, Chang’e 4 in 2019, Chang’e 5 in 2020 and Chang’e 6 in 2024 all touched down successfully, which is a record no other country holds. Two caveats keep that honest. It counts landing attempts only, and China has made four while the Soviet Union and the United States each made dozens across the 1960s and 70s. And the programme has had setbacks that were not landings: the Yutu rover suffered a mechanical fault in 2014 that left it unable to move, and the Longjiang-1 microsatellite failed to reach lunar orbit in 2018.

What is the International Lunar Research Station?

The International Lunar Research Station is China’s name for a permanent Moon base, developed with Russia and a growing list of partner countries and institutions. Chang’e 7 and Chang’e 8 are described as building its basic model, which China targets for completion around 2035, with an extended model in the 2040s. Chang’e 8, targeted for 2028, is the resource mission: it is intended to test making use of what is already on the Moon, including 3D printing building material from lunar soil.

When will China land astronauts on the Moon?

China’s stated goal is to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, and the hardware is being flight-tested now. On 11 February 2026 it ran a combined test at Wenchang: a low-altitude demonstration of the Long March 10 rocket together with an escape test of the Mengzhou crew capsule at maximum dynamic pressure. The escape system fired 66 seconds in and the capsule splashed down about 880 seconds after liftoff.
